Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Top Hygiene Tips

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is literally a contact sport, which means it is considered compulsory for everyone to take responsibility for their own hygiene.  It is also the academies job to play it's role keep cleaning the premises specially the mats surface.  At all our MEBJJA clubs we make it top priority to clean the mats after every session, ensuring the saftey of our students and participants, but this must be paired with every member's hygiene both on and off the club.  Besides preventing the spread of certain skin deseases, it will surelly makes training more enjoyable for everyone.  No one likes rolling with the stinky gi or bad breath guy... neither with the 'wild cat's nails' student that leaves everyone scratched after each roll. It’s everyone’s responsibility to take care of their own hygiene to keep everyone at the gym happy and healthy.

A few tips for keeping good hygiene at your BJJ sessions:

1. Make sure fingernails and toenails are trimmed before sessions.

2. Ensure your deodorant isn't "expiring" before even wearing your gi.

3. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth before training to prevent offensive bad breath.

4. Take a shower as soon as possible after each and every session to reduce the risk of skin infections.

5. Wash your uniform right after training. To leave your uniform hangged to just air dry after sessions won't avoid bacterias or bad smell.

6. Do not train with open or infected wounds. As for small cuts or scratches, make to sure they're not infected cover them properly before session.

7. Do not train if you feel sick even with just common illnesses such as the minor cold or flu.

8. Any skin issues need to be addressed immediately. Often, issues like staph infections and MRSA start out looking and feeling like a bug bite, or ingrown hair. If you notice anything suspicious on your skin, please consult a physician and do not train until it is all cleared up.

9. Create the habit to wear compression shorts and rash guard under your gi.

10. Be sure to never walk out the mats on bare foot.

11. Do not leave your dirty clothing and training gear unattended at the gym. Ensure to carry them back after the session inside plastic bags. Leaving these articles causes foul odors and the spread of germs compromising the cleaness and safety of the whole training facility.
